Energy Saving in Evaporative Coolers using Permanent Magnet Brushless Motors

Authors

Abstract:

Due to low cost, evaporative coolers are used in most of the central regions and in the warm and dry climate of Iran and are considered as one of the major consumers of electrical power. Most evaporative coolers use single-phase induction motors by connecting directly to the power grid. But their eefficiency is very low, and their replacement with high efficiency electric motors is considered by government bodies. Today, the use of permanent magnet brushless motors has been considered in many industrial and home applications. In this paper, the details of using the brushless motors in the application of the evaporative cooler are presented and the requirements and standards for designing and manufacturing the brushless motor and its drive are stated. A 0.5 hp brushless motor and its drive are designed and built. This motor is tested by a dynamometer and standard testing equipment. Also, the 5000 m3/h evaporative cooler equipped with this brushless motor is tested in the reference laboratory. The results obtained in both tests are compared with single-phase induction motor test results. The results demonstrate an increase of at least 60% energy consumption compared to evaporative coolers equipped to single-phase induction motors. Also, the economic considerations and extra cost of brushless motors and other technical considerations are discussed in this article. The results indicate that the use of brushless motors in this application can be a huge step in saving energy, protecting the environment and reducing the problems caused by electricity consumption in the country.

Simulating permanent magnet brushless motors in DYMOLA

Multi-domain dynamic simulation is becoming an issue in the design of high performance mechatronic systems, where advances are foreseen only if the mutual interaction of different parts of the system is well understood. The modelling environment provided by DYMOLA with Modelica language proved to be ideal for studying the mutual effects of mechanics, electronics and control in a brushless motor...

Optimal current waveforms for brushless permanent magnet motors

In this paper we give energy-optimal excitation current waveforms for a permanent magnet synchronous motor that result in a desired average torque. Our formulation generalizes previous work by including a general back-EMF waveform, voltage and current limits, an arbitrary phase winding connection, a simple eddy current loss model, and a trade-off between power loss and torque ripple. Determinin...

Brushless Permanent Magnet Servomotors

Electrical motors drive a variety of loads in today’s world. Almost every industrial process relies on some kind of electrical motors and generators. There exist billions electric motors used in different applications all over the world. Majority of them are small fractional HP motors use in household appliances. However, they used about 5% of the electricity used by the motors. Three phase mot...

Application Characteristics of Permanent Magnet Synchronous and Brushless dc Motors for Servo Drives

The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and the brushless dc motor (BDCM) have many similarities; they both have permanent magnets on the rotor and require alternating stator currents to produce constant torque. The difference in these two machines is that the PMSM and the BDCM has sinusoidal and trapezoidal back emfs, respectively. This means these two machines have different operating c...

Deciphering Innovative Principles for Designing Electric Brushless D.C. Permanent Magnet Motors

This paper shows how a routine design optimization task can be enhanced to decipher important and innovative design principles which provide far-reaching knowledge about the problem at hand. Although the so-called ‘innovization’ task is proposed by the first author elsewhere for this task, the application to a brushless D.C. permanent magnet motor design is the first real application to a discr...
